Academic integrity and cheating

Academic integrity is about being honest and responsible in your studies. Cheating is not allowed, and violations can have consequences, but you will receive good information and support to do things right from the start.

Three things you should know

1. The Board of Student Affairs at NLA University College handles several cases of academic dishonesty each year, which result in annulment and suspension for one to two semesters.

2. Some of the cases of academic dishonesty could probably have been avoided if the students had taken more time in their studies and checked sources and references carefully before submitting.

3. You will receive help and support in writing academically, but you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the rules for correct referencing.

Rules regarding cheating and plagiarism

General information about cheating

Cheating is breaking the rules in such a way that it may result in you gaining an unfair advantage or result – whether it happens by mistake, or with the intention of cheating.

The University and College Act § 12-4 stipulates that an exam or mandatory coursework may be annulled if a student has cheated or attempted to cheat. Furthermore, the student may be excluded from the university college and lose the right to take exams at educational institutions under the law for a period.

Examples of cheating in Regulations for studies at NLA University College § 54

a.	use of illegal aids

b.	irregular collaboration between candidates, groups or other persons, which leads to the submission of non-independent text

c.	plagiarism, missing or incorrect use of sources so that other people's text appears as the candidate's own

d.	complicity in another candidate's cheating

e.	knowledge of exam questions before the exam starts

f.	manipulation of the exam paper after it has been submitted

g.	access to the exam by having cheated on tests and the like which provide conditions for taking the exam

h.	approval to participate in compulsory education or other compulsory activities on the basis of what the candidate knows is incorrect

i.	acting in violation of guidelines for the individual exam.

Plagiarism - the most common form of cheating

Plagiarism is the lack of or incorrect referencing that makes another person's work appear as one's own work – whether this happens by mistake or with the intention of cheating.

Irregular use of artificial intelligence falls under the rules of plagiarism.

Examples of plagiarism can be:

Copying someone else's text without referring to the source.
Providing sources, informants, or data material that do not exist.
Using another person's exact words without marking this as a quote.
Your text has not been reworked to a sufficient extent, it is too close to the original text, but is presented as your own formulation.
Using your own previously submitted (counting) work, where it is likely to give an unfair advantage.
Paying for or submitting work that has been written or prepared, in whole or in part, by others or internet sites.

Consequences of cheating

If a student is caught cheating, there will be serious consequences:

Submitted work or activity will be cancelled.
The student may be suspended for up to one to two semesters.
In particularly serious cases, the student may be suspended for up to four semesters.

Cheating on coursework is treated as seriously as cheating on exams.

This is what happens when a student is suspended:

The student is suspended from teaching and exams at NLA University College during the period of suspension, and loses access to the Canvas learning platform.
At the same time, the student loses the right to take exams at all other educational institutions under the law, but may still be admitted to and participate in teaching at other educational institutions during the period of suspension.
The suspension will be registered in a joint register for suspended students (RUST). The note will be removed when the period of suspension has expired.
The student must notify the department if they wish to resume their studies after the suspension has ended.
