International placements for teacher training students

Teacher training students at NLA University College are offered international placements as part of their ordinary practical training in the programme.

  • 4–5 weeks in a country in the Global South
  • Placement at a local educational institution

In this way, they can learn something about how teaching and training of children and young people can take place in another culture. The students experience cultural encounters with the communication challenges that come with them, and they get to practice flexibility and tolerance towards people with other perspectives.

Where can students travel?

Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar and Nepal are examples of countries where students have had international placements in recent times.

Who can travel?

The guidelines for international placements for teacher training students set out the following conditions: “The student must have passed all previous placement periods and must have demonstrated an ability to be responsible, independent, committed and show initiative, as well as have a reasonable academic level. The student should follow normal study progression with a reasonable academic level, and normally not have any outstanding exams.” It also states that students who are under special suitability assessment cannot have international placements.
