How much does it cost?
You do not pay tuition fees to NLA the semester you are on exchange.

The costs associated with exchange programs depend on your destination. Some places require tuition fees, but there are also several places with free spots. On the page "Where can I go" you will find presentations of the individual partner institutions with an overview of expected costs. Prices are subject to change.
No tuition fee to NLA during exchange
As an exchange student, you do not pay any tuition fees to NLA University College, but you must pay the semester fee to the student welfare organization to maintain student status at NLA.
Erasmus+
If you travel through the Erasmus+ program, you do not pay any tuition fees at the host institution, and you receive an Erasmus scholarship. The Erasmus scholarship is in addition to the support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund.
The Erasmus+ scholarship consists of subsistence allowance and travel allowance. Certain student groups may receive an Erasmus+ additional grant.
The scholarship requires that NLA has a valid Erasmus+ agreement with the host institution. NLA has Erasmus+ agreements with universities in many European countries. Read more about Erasmus+ here.
Support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund
As an exchange student, you can apply to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund for support. The basic grant is the same for all higher education taken full-time, whether in Norway or abroad. As an exchange student, you can also receive travel support*. In addition, it is also possible to apply for tuition fee support if you have to pay tuition fees abroad.
Check the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund's pages for how much support you can get if you go to Nordic countries or to countries outside the Nordic region. You can apply to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund for support after you have received an admission letter from the host institution and you have had the subjects you will take abroad pre-approved.
*For students who receive travel support through the Erasmus program, the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund's travel support will be cancelled. Erasmus travel support gives you more money than the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund's travel support.
The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund's language scholarship
If you are going to follow instruction in a language other than English, Swedish or Danish, you can get a language scholarship to participate in a preparatory language course. Read more here.
Some countries give more scholarships
If you go on exchange to Brazil, Japan, China, South Africa or South Korea, you will receive NOK 4277 per month in addition to the basic loan and travel support for the academic year 2024-25. You can receive this scholarship for up to ten months.
Other scholarship schemes
Information about several types of scholarships can be found on the website of ANSA. They have also collected useful tips on financing stays abroad.
Smart things to think about
As an exchange student, there are some extra things to consider. For example, you must expect costs for necessary insurance. If you travel to countries outside Europe, it also happens that applying for a visa costs money. In addition, exchange rates vary, and these variations can affect how much you actually get for Norwegian kroner when you are on exchange.
Especially for the USA
Good health insurance is required for everyone studying in the USA. You must have this both to have your visa approved and to have access to health care during your stay. It is your host institution that informs you about what kind of insurance they require/recommend that you purchase there in connection with your studies. These vary in price, and in exceptional cases you can apply for an exemption if you yourself have student insurance that covers as well as the one offered there. Remember that costs associated with health insurance are not necessarily covered by the basic support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. It is very common for students who choose to study in the USA to have to use their own funds to support their study stay there.
