How to apply for exchange studies

Start planning 6–12 months before departure – think of it as gearing up for an exciting adventure! Here you will find all the information you need to get through the application process easily and smoothly.

Regular application deadlines for student exchange

February 15 for the fall semester (you can apply between December 15 and February 15)
September 15 for the spring semester (you can apply between July 1 and September 15)

The application process consists of three steps

Step 1: Application to NLA

You are applying for exchange on Søknadsweb. Søknadsweb is open during the application periods 15 Dec-15 Feb and 1 Jul-15 Sept. Before applying, you must ensure that the university or college you wish to travel to offers relevant subjects.

On the application, you can enter up to 3 desired exchange destinations in order of priority.

Once the Department of Internationalization at NLA has determined that you are qualified for exchange, you can proceed with steps 2 and 3.

Step 2: Pre-approval of topics

Before you go on exchange, the courses you plan to take must be approved by NLA University College. This ensures that the courses can be included in your degree after the exchange.

It is wise to have more courses approved than you actually plan to take, in case of changes. If you switch to courses that have not been pre-approved, you must submit a new application immediately.

The deadline for submitting an application for pre-approval is April 1 for the autumn semester and October 15 for the spring semester. Application form for pre-approval (link).

Step 3: Application to the host institution abroad

Once you have been assessed as qualified by NLA, NLA will notify the host institution that you have been nominated. From there, you will usually receive an email with forms and information about the further process. Routines, deadlines and requirements vary. Keep up to date on what applies to your application.

Once you have received an admission letter, you must send it to the Department of Internationalization at NLA to be registered as an exchange student.
