Here you can find important information about housing, immigration and insurance, for both degree-seeking and exchange students.

Housing

Bergen

International students coming to NLA Bergen are usually guaranteed housing through Sammen, the student welfare organisation in Bergen, as long as they submit their application before the deadline. During peak periods, however, some students may be required to share a room with another student.

Kristiansand

International students coming to NLA Kristiansand are usually guaranteed housing through SiA, the student welfare organization in Kristiansand, as long as they submit their application before the deadline. Before applying, you need a pre-booking code that you will receive from International Office at NLA after accepting your study place. You must not apply without the pre-booking code.

SiA offers a variety of housing options in Kristiansand, catering to different needs and budgets. Please find more information on SiA Housing website

Please note: Degree-seeking students from Nordic countries applying for a study place by June 1 are not necessarily guaranteed housing. We recommend all European citizens to apply for a study place latest by April 15.

Oslo

Important notice

Immigration

Study permit is a residence permit for students. Students with EU/EEA/Switzerland citizenship do not need a study permit. However, you still need to get registered at the police station after arrival. Nordic citizens staying for less than 6 months do not have to get registered.

Students from outside EU/EEA/Switzerland, staying for more than 3 months, need a study permit to attend their studies in Norway. In order to be granted a study permit, you must document that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living costs in Norway.

Please start the study permit application process immediately after receiving the admission letter.

Insurance

Degree-seeking students (staying for more than a year)

If you are planning to stay in Norway for more than 1 year, you will automatically become a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (Folketrygden). This means that you are entitled to health services in Norway, and you pay the same (subsidized) fees as the Norwegian citizens.

Please notice that the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme is not valid during your trip to and from Norway. It also does not cover any medical expenses during leisure trips abroad or repatriation to your home country in the event of medical emergency. Private health care and loss of property are also not covered. It is therefore recommended to consider a private health and travel insurance in addition.

EU/EEA Citizens staying for less than a year

Please make sure that you have a sufficient health insurance. You should have a European Health Insurance Card as a minimum. Please notice that the European Health Insurance Card coverage has limitations related to certain situations such as repatriation to your home country in the event of medical emergency, private health care, loss of property etc. It is therefore recommended to consider an private health and travel insurance in addition.

Students from outside EU/EEA staying for 3-12 months

You can apply for a voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme after your arrival. We will provide more information about this during orientation for international students. However, it is recommended to have a private health insurance at least for the beginning of your stay, until you have submitted the application for the voluntary membership.
