THE IMAGE OF WATER IN THE SUBMERGED CITY OF NEW YORK IN ALL THE WATER IN THE WORLD BY EIREN CAFFALL

The essay analyses the image of water in the post-apocalyptic New York in Eiren Caffall’s novel All the Water in the World (2025). The importance of the image of water in the novel is accounted by Caffall’s portrayal of the submerged cityscape of New York, which provides fertile ground for reflections upon the fate of humankind amidst the climate apocalypse. The essay argues that the image of water in the novel is reminiscent of the ecogothic motifs of flooding and climate change-related Armageddon. In this light, the essay provides a brief review of the literature on Gothic fiction that involves water and flooding, and, thereafter, proceeds to the analysis of the image of water of the Atlantic that flooded New York and changed the lives of its inhabitants.
