Journalism, Media and Communication (JMC) – The social responsibility of public discourse
Led by Professor Terje Skjerdal, the JMC research group investigates the crucial role of media and journalism as institutions for social responsibility. We understand media not only as a mirror of society, but as a shaping force that influences public opinion, holds power accountable, and promotes the dialogue that is essential for a well-functioning democracy. Our work examines the ethical formation of journalists and the media's responsibility in an age marked by fragmentation and disinformation.

Vårt kjerneengasjement: Ansvar for den offentlige sfæren
We focus on:
- Journalistic ethics and roles: Studying how journalists navigate their social responsibility in various political and cultural contexts.
- Media development: Building capacity for robust and ethical media practices in East Africa and other regions.
- Combating digital harm: Researching how to prevent hate speech and violence-promoting behavior in digital spaces.
Important research projects as acts of social responsibility
Theoretical basis: Formation in and through media
Our research connects media ethics with formation theory and examines how media use shapes citizen identity, and how journalism education shapes professional character.
Conclusion: Guardians of democracy
The JMC group provides the doctoral program with a critical understanding of the media's formative power. We explore how social responsibility is realized through communication – and how it must be continuously renewed to maintain a vibrant democracy.
