Erasmus+ programme

Erasmus+ is the EU's educational programme that provides financial support for studies and internships abroad. The aim of Erasmus+ is to give you the opportunity to live in another country, learn a language, get to know another culture and gain international experience through exchange. NLA has Erasmus+ agreements with a number of European countries.

You can get support for this in the Erasmus+ program

Stipend for study abroad

If you go on exchange through the Erasmus+ program, you do not pay any tuition fees. You can also receive an Erasmus scholarship consisting of subsistence support for a maximum of 4 months. The amount of subsistence support depends on where you travel:

Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands: 530 EUR per month.
Other countries: 470 EUR per month.

Erasmus travel grant in the Nordic countries

All students traveling to a Nordic country (Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) receive an Erasmus travel grant. The support is higher for green travel (by train or bus):

Travel distance: 100-499 km, 211 EUR
Travel distance: 500-1999 km, 309 EUR

The Erasmus+ scholarship is in addition to the basic support from Lånekassen and assumes that NLA has a valid Erasmus+ agreement with the host institution.

Supplementary grant for certain student groups

The following student groups can receive extra support for Erasmus+ study stays:

Students with children or other care responsibilities. Students with children under 18, regardless of whether the child is participating in the mobility or not, can receive an additional grant. Students with care responsibilities for younger siblings, elderly family members and/or family members with serious mental or physical illness or substance abuse can also receive an additional grant.
Students with permanent disabilities and chronic illnesses. This may include, for example, long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory disabilities.
Students with refugee status.
Students belonging to indigenous peoples or national minorities. Students who have a connection to the indigenous population (Sami) or the national minorities (Jews, Kvens/Norwegian Finns, Romani people/Tatars, Forest Finns and Roma) can receive an additional grant. Sami students must either be in, or be the child of a person who is or has been in the Sami electoral roll. Other students must use the relevant language as their home language, or have/have had a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent with the relevant language as their home language.

Students must sign a declaration (declaration on honour) to confirm that they belong to the category.

Students who travel on stays lasting more than 30 days will receive an additional grant of EUR 250 / month.

Students who travel on short-term mobility will receive an additional grant of 100 euros for stays lasting from 5-14 days, and 150 euros for short-term mobility stays lasting from 15-30 days.

Documents you need to complete to receive the Erasmus+ grant

Learning Agreement: Must be completed before the stay and signed by the student, NLA, and the host institution.
Grant Agreement: Must be completed before the stay and signed by the student and NLA.
Confirmation of arrival: Must be completed at the beginning of the stay and signed by the host institution. Download here.
Participant report: Must be completed electronically after the end of the stay.
Confirmation of stay: Must be completed towards the end of the stay and signed by the host institution. Download here.

You will receive 80% of your Erasmus+ grant after you have submitted the Confirmation of arrival. The remaining 20% of the grant will be paid out after you have completed the final report and submitted confirmation of the length of stay.

Good to know before you apply

Language test

The universities in the Erasmus+ agreement state what language level you must have to follow the teaching, usually level B1 or B2 according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

For Erasmus+ students who are going on a study or work placement, it is optional to take a language test before departure.

How to take the test

The test is called Placement test and is available in 24 EU languages.

Go to EU Academy and log in
Search for “Placement test”
Select the correct language and click “Enrol”
Press “Attempt quiz now”
The test takes 10–45 minutes
After you have completed it, you will see your language level

Our partner institutions may request documentation in English. If you are going to an institution within Erasmus+, it is the host institution that ultimately decides the extent to which they can accommodate your needs. It is therefore important that you contact them early to clarify what possibilities exist.

Cancel Erasmus+ exchange

If you cancel your exchange, you may have to pay back the Erasmus grant. How much you have to pay depends on how long you have been away:

Cancellation before two months: You must pay back the entire grant.
Cancellation after two months: You only pay for the time remaining of the stay. In case of illness or other valid reasons, you can apply for exemption. Remember to attach a medical certificate.
