Immigration

All non-EU/EEA students who are planning to stay in Norway for more than 3 months, must apply for a study permit (residence permit) before arriving to Norway. If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you do not have to apply for a residence permit, but you have to get registered at the police station after arrival. Nordic citizens (from Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) do not have to go to the police station – they only need to report their moving to the National Registry (Folkeregisteret). For more information please see UDI’s website for Study Permit

Study permit

In order to get the study permit, you must document that you have sufficient funds to cover the tuition and living costs in Norway. Without such documentation, a study permit will not be granted. 

If you come to NLA on exchange through a project (NORHED, Erasmus+ Global Mobility, StAR) that provides a scholarship, your admission letter can serve as proof that you have the funds to cover your stay.

International students coming to NLA are normally guaranteed accommodation through the local student welfare organisation, provided that the accommodation is applied within the deadline.

Housing Bergen

International students are usually guaranteed housing through Sammen, the student welfare organisation in Bergen, as long as they submit their application before the deadline. During peak periods, however, some students may be required to share a room with another student.

Housing Kristiansand

Students coming to NLA Kristiansand can apply for housing through the student welfare organization SiA. Before applying, you need a pre-booking code that you will receive from International Office at NLA after accepting your study place. You must not apply without the pre-booking code. Housing Oslo

Students coming to NLA Oslo can apply for housing through the student welfare organization SiO.

Important notice

Booking accommodation through the local student welfare organization is voluntary, and it is at your own responsibility. It is important to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions in your housing contract. Please notice that if you cancel your accommodation after the withdrawal deadline, you might have to pay the rent for 3-6 months. The housing contract is between you and the student welfare organization.

EU-citizens

Please make sure that you have a sufficient health insurance. You should bring a European Health Insurance Card as a minimum. You should also consider an additional private health insurance as the European Health Insurance Card coverage has certain limitations.

Other than EU-citizens

If you are staying in Norway for 3-12 months, we will help you to apply for a voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme after your arrival. However, you should have a private health insurance during your travel to Norway as well as a minimum of two first weeks of your stay. 

Please notice that the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme is not valid during your trip to and from Norway. It also does not cover any medical costs during leisure trips to other countries, or repatriation to your home country in case of medical emergency. Therefore it is recommended to consider an additional, private health insurance, for your entire stay.
