Social Sciences and Humanities
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Group (SOSH) contributes to the development of social studies didactics as a field of research in Norway, the Nordic region and internationally, and to securing robust knowledge bases for social studies (including social science, history and social geography) in schools, early childhood education and teacher education.
The group focuses on social studies didactics understood broadly as all reflections that can be made on social studies as a school-, early childhood- and teacher education subject.
SOSH unites researchers with backgrounds in a range of the disciplinary and interdisciplinary research fields from which the school subject draws its content. The group has fifteen members who meet for a writing workshop on Mondays in even-numbered weeks. The members have extensive networks and regularly participate in Nordic and international conferences.
The school subject social studies is central to the formation of responsible democratic citizens and to the further development of social structures that promote trust and community. The members of SOSH conduct research on democratic citizenship, human rights, historical empathy and other topics in history didactics, as well as sociological questions related to diversity, identity and belonging. Sustainability didactics, teaching materials and deep learning in lower primary social studies is also within the scope of their research. The social studies didactics portfolio is relevant to the PhD programme “Social Responsibility and Formation”. Several of the members’ publications and projects also address other sociological themes that are central to the programme, such as division of responsibilities related to formation between different social institutions, and how such institutions affect social development, pertaining social equality, exclusion and knowledge.
