«Dei begynner her» – barn blant ull, troll og tidleg litterasitet
Denne artikkelen diskuterer korleis barn kan utvikle tidleg litterasitet i ein norsk barnehagekontekst. Vi argumenterer for at ei holistisk, naturleg, sosial tilnærming til litterasitet gir rike moglegheiter til å utvikle litterasitet. Vi legg vekt på korleis ulike litterasitetspraksisar, inkludert samtalar med ulike abstraksjonsnivå, planlagde litterasitetshendingar og vekt på det fysiske miljøet gir rom for det Burnett og Merchant (2020) kallar litterasitet-som-hending, små mikrohendingar der litterasitetshendingar blir, eller ikkje blir, sette ut i livet. Vi viser fram og diskuterer praksisen i ein barnehage som etter vårt syn har lykkast med å skape eit språk- og litterasitetsfremjande miljø for barna i barnehagen. Barna møter litterasitet-som-hending og blir merksame på korleis tekst og skrift er meiningsfylt. Vi hevdar at ei slik tilnærming til litterasitet stemmer overeins med den skandinaviske barnehagetradisjonen. Materialet vårt er både observasjonar, fotografi, biletmateriale skapt av barna (digitalt materiale, måleri og teikningar), intervju med pedagogisk leiar og praksisforteljingar.

“This Is Where They Start” – Children Among Wool, Trolls, and Early Literacy
This article discusses how children can develop early literacy in a Norwegian kindergarten context. We argue that a holistic, natural, social approach to literacy provides rich opportunities for literacy development. We emphasize how different literacy practices, including conversations with varying levels of abstraction, planned literacy events, and focus on the physical environment, create space for what Burnett and Merchant (2020) define as literacy-as-event, small micro-events where literacy events are, or are not, realized. We showcase and discuss the practice in a kindergarten that, in our view, has succeeded in creating a language and literacy-promoting environment for the children. The children encounter literacy-as-event and become aware of how text and writing are meaningful. We claim that such an approach to literacy aligns with the Scandinavian kindergarten tradition. Our material includes observations, photographs, visual materials created by the children (digital materials, paintings, and drawings), interviews with the pedagogical leader, and practice stories.
