Developing a journalism programme in the South

The Graduate School of Journalism and Communication at Addis Ababa University opened on March 15, 2004. The School represents the first full journalism programme in Ethiopia. It consists of a 2-year MA degree in Journalism, together with a Centre for Research, Short-Term Training and Continuing Education. The School is funded by the Norwegian government through the aid agency Norad.

This paper reflects on the professional and academic challenges when developing a journalism programme in a country where large portions of the media are governmental and where the media structure is weak. Special attention is paid to the distinctive profile of the MA programme in which Media and Democracy and related subjects play a central role. Also discussed are the policy decisions that were made concerning the battle between journalism and other communication subjects in light of the socio-political context in Ethiopia.
