Journalist responses to newsroom constraints in the Ethiopian state media

This paper presents ongoing research into journalism cultures in three large media organizations in Ethiopia, all state-owned: Ethiopian Television, Ethiopian News Agency and Ethiopian Herald. Through a series of in-depth interviews I set forth to analyse how journalists cope with the potential conflict between being a professional journalist and working for a state media institution. I have interviewed 55 journalists so far; 24 in Ethiopian Television, 15 in Ethiopian News Agency, and 16 in Ethiopian Herald. The findings suggest that even if the professional conflict is highly evident among the journalists, they tend to adopt pragmatic strategies to even out the contradictions. Most journalists are found to negate any political affiliation and show identification with a wider journalism community. I suggest that one of the foremost reconciliation strategies is self-censorship.
