Media and Society
In this course students will study the relationship between media, culture and society where the emphasis normally includes the news, advertising, internet communications and public relations. The course will on looking at the social, cultural and political consequences of media on in building up a democratic society and the role media play in the production, reception and representation of various groups of societies which includes their gender, class, etc. The course will be based on the premise that media, and the industries that produce media products, play significant cultural and political roles in contemporary societies. Drawing upon various media outlets, including radio, television and the internet, students will review the social, economic and political organization of media and content and effects of media messages. They will also analyze the important role played by media in preserving, reforming (and dominating) social values at the local and global levels. Particular attention is paid to the rise of electronic, digital, social and emerging technologies in the expansion of public spheres, individual communication and apparent shifts in power from private organizations and individuals to citizens and publics. The course addresses sociology of the media and communications highlighting in particular media and social change phenomena including gender issues, developments in the film and entertainment industry, crime and conflict reduction and promotion of values of social harmony and peace. The culture industry will be studied in connection with broader development experiences of communities around the world. The course will give greater focus on contemporary society and its media institutions and social transformation experiences.
