My father was a migrant Aramean : Old Testament motifs for a theology of migration

Archaeological and historical sources attest to human migration as a common phenomenon, detectable through time and space. Migration is not a new development in the history of humankind, created by recent colonial structures of political power or modern means of swift travelling; in various forms it has always been there. This essay will address a small but important aspect of this common phenomenon, as seen from a Christian perspective: the historical and theological experiences of the migrants with texts and motifs from the Old Testament, the first part of the Christian Bible. The discussion falls in three parts: first some examples of migrant experiences with the Old Testament from two quite recent historical epochs, then a survey of some major Old Testament migration motifs, and finally some lines in the relationship between the two previous parts, as an attempt at making a contribution from the perspective of Old Testament studies to the development of a more general theology of migration.
