New Age
“New Age” refers to a conglomerate of spiritual ideas and practices in contemporary western societies. Its teachings are derived from a variety of different sources, and there exists no common doctrine, institution, teacher, or scripture. Instead, the New Age comprises a series of different and sometimes conflicting teachings and authorities. These circulate through formal and informal organizations and networks. Can we nevertheless identify some common traits underlying the apparent heterogeneity of the “New Age”? This entry addresses this question in relation to the history, teachings, and social structure of the New Age.
