Pedometers

Pedometers are among the earliest and most widely adopted wearables for tracking physical activity (PA), especially in school Physical Education (PE). This chapter outlines their conceptual basis, technological development, methodological considerations, and practical use in assessing movement in children and adolescents. Step count, the main output, should be interpreted as an indicator of movement volume rather than exercise intensity or physiological strain. Still, metrics such as total steps, steps per minute, and steps per lesson offer simple, meaningful ways for teachers and researchers to gauge opportunities for activity and limit sedentary time during PE. The chapter reviews key device types, from mechanical spring-lever models to piezoelectric and accelerometer-based pedometers, noting differences in sensitivity, accuracy, and comparability. It also addresses methodological aspects, including device placement, familiarization, monitoring duration, and data processing. While pedometers are inexpensive, easy to use, and provide immediate feedback, they cannot capture intensity or non-ambulatory activity. A school-based example illustrates how step data can support pedagogical reflection by comparing lesson formats. Overall, pedometers remain a practical and scalable option for monitoring and encouraging PA in educational contexts.
