Sølvamulettene fra Ketef Hinnom

The Silveramulets from Ketef Hinnom. Two silver amulets found near Jerusalem and published in 1986 by Barkay are the only extant biblical texts dating from the first temple period. They were found in a repository together with a lot of other remains from the seventh century. The amulets could very well be predecessors of the Jewish custom of wearing phylacteries. Both amulets contain parts of the Aronitic blessing (Num 6,24-26). One amulet probably includes a few words from Deut 7,9. It is argued that this early combination of texts, traditionally allocated to the priestly source and to Deuteronomy, makes it difficult to maintain a late dating of the Pentateuch. It is noted that the issue of date and unity of the Pentateuch is absent from the scholarly discussion of the amulets.
