Teaching theology through song

Members of older generations often maintained a repertoire of hymns and songs that functioned as a cultural resource, enabling them to hum or recall melodies in response to everyday experiences, irrespective of whether they engaged in regular vocal performance. They learned these songs in school, in confirmation classes or at Sunday school. The L97 curriculum, implemented in Norwegian schools in 1997, continued to require that pupils acquire a repertoire of hymns, preferably learned by heart. This leads to the following questions: Which songs can be drawn upon in times of contemporary crisis? Does singing remain a meaningful practice? This chapter explores the pivotal role of hymns and songs within the Christian church, with particular attention to their function in times of crisis. This chapter investigates their pedagogical significance from diverse perspectives, commencing with broad conceptual considerations and historical context. The concluding section of the chapter presents examples from Norwegian hymn history that demonstrate varied responses to pain, sorrow and fear in both personal and global contexts.
