The Crisis of the Church and a Plea for Playful Theological Education

The purpose of this chapter is not to present detailed statistics on the state of the church. Rather, the chapter wants to offer reflection on how theology and theological training should respond to the church`s loss of hegemony, influence, and relevance in some parts of the world. This book addresses what it means to do glocal, theological education in times of crisis. This chapter explores the fundamental challenges that marks the crisis of the church, particularly in the Western world. It further asks where theology and theological training should look for inspiration to find ways of tackling the feeling of loss and decline, arguing for rediscovering play as a formative force in shaping glocal, theological learning communities around the world. The research question that this chapter seeks to answer is therefore: what challenges does the experience of lost hegemony present to the church and to theological education, and how may a theology of play and the practice of play help re-shape theological education in times of crisis?
