The Cross and the Pen: On Ingeborg Grytten’s writing
Ingeborg Grytten (b. 1668, date of death unknown) wrote hymns for private devotion.
Her collection of poems, Kaars-Frugt (Cross-Fruit) was published in several editions. Her hymns show great variety and have a personal touch, but are also closely connected to the Lutheran devotional hymn tradition of her time. Her poetry also anticipates the pietistic literature of the following period.
Ingeborg Grytten suffered from severe illness; perhaps leprosy. The attention given to her illness has sometimes overshadowed her skills as an author. Ingeborg Grytten enjoyed privileges that few others with the same condition were granted. She had access to books and music. She was both talented and knowledgeable. Instead of allowing the “cross tree” to weigh her down completely, she harvested its fruits and transformed them into edifying poems and hymns for her contemporaries and for posterity.
This article highlights the main themes of Ingeborg Grytten’s hymns: sin and grace. The cross is a central motif in Grytten’s texts, understood both as burdens of life, and because of humankind’s sinfullness. She uses a great deal of biblical imagery. Female references are central in her hymns, and the “I” that speaks in the texts has a distinctly female voice.
