The need for research collaboration in Sub-Saharan Africa

There has clearly been a growth in the African media research production in the past two decades. However, there is still a lack of connectivity between different African media research environments.

We also miss a place where we can go to get an overview of the different schools and research environments on the continent. The individual researcher may have a grasp of what is going on in the region where they are placed, but they may not know if someone else is doing something similar to their own research next door (unless they happen to come across it at a conference).

There have been attempts in the past to link African media researchers and educators together. The African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) was an important organization for many years. Today ACCE is active only in Nigeria.

We have regional conferences which are important, such as the annual events of SACOMM (Southern African Communication Association) and EACA (East African Communication Association). And we have ICA Africa. What we don’t have, is a comprehensive network beyond the conferences and their parent organizations. This is what AfroMedia Network is going to resolve.
