The Stones of the Cooking Fire are Three: African Proverbs as Interpretive Resource in African Biblical Proverbs Studies
Proceeding from some observations made by John S. Mbiti, the article analyzes models for using African popular proverbs as a tool for interpreting Old Testament proverbs. First, three actors of biblical interpretation are focused on: the biblical text, the interpretive context, and the interpreter. Second, five African biblical scholars who have made use of African, comparative material in their analysis of Old Testament proverbs are discussed. And third, some lines are drawn between African and Western interpretations of biblical proverbs.
