Understanding government journalism: Perspectives from Ethiopia

State-owned media continue to be the order of the day across Africa, especially when it comes to broadcasting. One would perhaps expect that pressure from press freedom organizations and the international community led to the repeal of state control with the media – but moves by governments in a number of African countries point in the opposite direction. This paper looks at the case of Ethiopia, where the government continues to hold a
firm grip on significant parts of the media, and retains ownership of most of the broadcasting media. Specifically, the research looks into the perspectives of journalists who work in the government-controlled media. Core questions are: To what extent do the journalists experience a conflict between being professionals and working for a state media institution? How do they reconcile the conflict? How are state media policies adopted and negotiated in daily journalistic activity?
