Education for Sustainable Development in Relation to EFL: Some Theoretical Considerations
Abstract: The present article involves a study that seeks to outline a range of
theoretical considerations associated with Education for Sustainable Development
(ESD) in relation to the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign
Language (EFL). The aim of the study is to identify and classify theoretical
considerations on ESD in EFL settings that are found in the leading scholarly
journals in the field of ESD, namely Sustainability published by MDPI and
Journal of Teacher Education for Sustainability issued by De Gruyter Open
(Sciendo). Given that there is no published research on how ESD is problematised
in these scholarly journals in relation to EFL contexts, the study provides
an overview of the theoretical considerations on ESD that are applicable to
EFL. The article concludes with a number of practical linguo-didactic implications
that exemplify the application of ESD to EFL studies.
