Interpreting Religious Symbols in a Public Context

Taking Robert Cumming Neville's theology of symbolic engagement as a starting point, the paper ventures into a case study comparing the Norwegian civil marriage ceremony and partnership registration formulas. Albeit marriage functions as a religious symbol in the civil ceremony, it is argued that the ceremony itself leans on religious community in providing the public imagination necessary to engage the symbol in transforming ways.
