Metadiscursive Practices in Argumentative Essays by Upper-Intermediate EFL Students

Argumentative essay writing is a commonly taught aspect of academic writing in English as a foreign language (EFL) in Northern Europe, in particular, Norway. A successful argumentative essay reflects EFL students’ genre-appropriate metadiscursive practices. Grounded in the approach to metadiscourse proposed and developed by Hyland and Swales, respectively, this conference contribution presents a study on metadiscursive practices in a corpus of argumentative essays written by a group of undergraduate EFL students on the upper-intermediate level of EFL proficiency (henceforth – participants). Specifically, the conference talk will address the participants’ referencing practices. The results of the quantitative analysis of the corpus indicate that the participants' referencing practices are dominated by books and book chapters (both in electronic and print formats), which are published by a number of reputable domestic publishing houses. The findings are discussed through the lens of linguo-didactic implications to the field of academic writing in EFL.
