SYNTACTIC STRUCTURES OF RESEARCH ARTICLE TITLES PUBLISHED IN DISCOURSE AND COMMUNICATION FOR SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION
Abstract: Given that there is a growing body of literature on sustainable education,
there seems to be an increase in scholarly attention to how a research article
(RA) is written and presented to the readers. The title of an RA is a central
element that helps to draw the readers’ attention to read the article further.
Currently, however, fairly little is known about syntactic structures of RA titles.
This article presents a study that seeks to analyse syntactic structures in RA titles
published in the journal Discourse and Communication for Sustainable
Education (DCSE). The study involves a corpus of the RA titles published in
DCSE from 2020 to 2024, which is analysed manually in order to identify a
range of syntactic structures in the titles and quantify them in order to arrive at
their descriptive statistics. The results of the corpus analysis reveal that the RA
titles in DCSE are characterised by the prevalence of noun phrases. These findings
are further discussed in the article.
